Yoga is an ancient science which has stood the
test of time in terms of scientific investigation and scrutiny. There exists a plethora of scientific research on the practices and
benefits of Yoga. Cancer and its treatment are associated with considerable distress, impaired quality of life, poor mental
health, and reduced physical function. In particular, cancer treatment itself can cause more immediate health consequences
than the symptoms of the illness.
"There is growing evidence that the ancient practice of Yoga may
be a good fit for cancer patients, even during treatment. I think many of the yoga programs are a little more gentle, and
[there are] things that cancer patients feel that they're capable of doing. Studies on breast cancer survivors have shown
that yoga may improve flexibility and arm function after surgery, along with improvements in body image and self-esteem, reduced
fatigue and pain control. " - Kerry Courney, the Canada Research Chair for cancer and exercise. (Full article can be found

"In
fact there are a number of yogic practices which may be helpful for people with cancer in reducing stress and managing side
effects, both during chemotherapy and medical procedures and after. Although people being treated for cancer usually do not
have enough strength to do a vigorous asana practice, the poses can be adapted to meet almost anyone's needs. Restorative
postures and simple pranayama exercises can be both energizing and relaxing, and require almost no physical effort. Meditation
and guided imagery (such as found in Yoga Nidra) can be deeply relaxing and reduce anxiety. Other yogic tools can help with
pain, a frequent cancer symptom, particularly in its later stages, including relaxation, meditation, and breathing practices.
The slower, deeper, more regular breathing that yoga facilitates can help you feel calmer and more energetic during the stressful
period of being diagnosed with cancer and enduring treatment for it. Yoga philosophy has very practical implications for people
with cancer. Yoga encourages you to listen to messages from your body (physical, emotional, and otherwise) and adjust your
practice accordingly." - Reproduced with permission from his book, YOGA AS MEDICINE - THE YOGIC PRESCRIPTION FOR HEALTH AND
HEALING by Timothy McCall, MD http://www.drmccall.com
Yoga Therapy for Cancer Patients is practical and enjoyable. Participants will find the program to be of direct benefit
to their recovery and quality of life.
Our SPECIALIZED Yoga Therapy PROGRAM for Cancer Patients is designed
to help offset health problems that result from both the disease and its treatment. Research suggests that stress-reduction
programs tailored to the cancer patient may help them cope with the acute effects of treatment and improve quality of life
after treatment. Our peaceful approach incorporates gentle movements designed to stretch and detoxify, breath work, visual
imagery, meditation, and guided relaxation.
In each class we begin with an awareness practice followed by an optional
"checking in" to share how we are doing at the moment or anything else of interest or concern. This is followed by gentle
movements to increase oxygen and lymph flow, a relaxation practice, and breath work. The class proceeds at a pace that is
good for you. There is no competition or expectation. You are encouraged to honour your own body and the experience you are
ready for in that moment. The class ends with a few moments of quiet reflection.
The
program is taught by Laraine Lalita Holt RYT, certified Integral YogaŽ instructor and Yoga Therapist for Cancer & Chronic
Illness. Lalita's training in Yoga Therapy took place at the Integral YogaŽ Center in Buckingham Virginia with Jnani
Chapman, one of the original pioneers in Yoga Therapy trained by Dr. Dean Ornish. Lalita is a member of the International
Association of Yoga Therapists.
